-President Donald Trump announced yesterday evening that the United States had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran just ahead of a looming deadline in which Trump warned of the complete destruction of the Middle Eastern country.

Ahead of the deadline, Trump warned that Iran’s “whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.”

In a post to his social media announcing the cessation agreement, which was mediated by Pakistan, Trump declared that Washington had “already met and exceeded all Military objectives,” adding that he was honored to “have this Longterm problem close to resolution.”

-Citing Trump’s escalating rhetoric on Iran ahead of last night’s deadline, former Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, once a close Trump associate, called for Trump to be removed from office, calling it “evil and madness.”

Other conservative media voices have also expressed their opposition to Trump’s escalatory threats, including Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens.

-Democratic Congressman John Larson said he filed impeachment articles against Trump, citing the war.

-Taiwan opposition leader Cheng Li-wun arrived in China yesterday, saying her acceptance of an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping represented a “journey for peace.”

The visit by Cheng, the leader of the pro-China Kuomintang (KMT), comes just ahead of a planned visit to China by President Trump and as Beijing ramps up its pressure campaign on the self-governing island.

China regards Taiwan as a renegade province and has pledged to bring it under its control by force if necessary. In his New Year’s message, Xi called the “reunification” between the two “unstoppable.”

The Chinese government has refused to speak to the government of Taiwanese President William Lai, who it has called a “separatist.” Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supports independence from Beijing.

Currently, the KMT-controlled parliament is holding up a $40 billion special defense budget proposed by Lai’s government.

Following the defeat of the Nationalist government led by Chiang Kai-shek by the Communists in 1949, the KMT retreated to Taiwan, where it established a separate government, cementing the island’s political divide with mainland China.

The party would rule the island with an iron fist until the lifting of martial law in 1987, which led to gradual democratization.
