The Week Ahead
-A runoff election in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in South Carolina will be held on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a runoff election in the Republican primary for Oklahoma governor will be held on the same day.
-Leaders from the African Union will meet on Saturday in Luanda, Angola, for two days of talks.
Major Developments
-The average U.S. gas price stood at $4.09 yesterday, amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to AAA.
-The United States imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian imports after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended bilateral talks with the Trump administration, saying Ottawa would match the duties “dollar for dollar.”
In remarks over the weekend, Carney said that the “old relationship” that Canada had with the United States “based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over.”

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said that Canada “wants the benefits of being a state, without being one.”
The developments are the latest in a standoff between Trump and the Canadian government that commenced when he returned to office last year.
-Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met privately in recent weeks to discuss potential points of compromise between the Trump administration and Democrats in the event that Democrats retake control of the House in November.
-A new analysis by The Washington Post shows that Republicans’ views have shifted dramatically over the last year, going from enthusiastic support for their construction to widespread opposition.
In an interview over the weekend, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who has moved to restrict their construction in the Lone Star State in recent weeks, said that the facilities “got the backlash they deserve.”
In an interview earlier this month, Trump called Abbott’s policy a “mistake” and said that data centers are “tremendously important” to the country’s growth and economic competition against China.
-In an interview yesterday, Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen said that he would not reject an endorsement from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), but he was “certainly not seeking” it.
Van Hollen is seen as a potential successor to Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.
-A federal judge struck down the Trump administration’s effort to block visas for immigrants from 75 countries.
-Chinese-made humanoid robots broke records set by humans at the world’s first-ever Robot Olympics in Beijing last week.
-Prediction market app Kalshi has overtaken its primary competitor, Polymarket, as use of the apps has surged.
-Nancy Kassebaum Baker, the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate in Kansas, died at the age of 94 on Friday.
Kassebaum Baker, the daughter of 1936 Republican presidential nominee Alf Landon, was first elected to the Senate in 1978 and served three terms.
Known for her moderate Republican politics, Kassebaum supported abortion rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, and a ban on assault weapons. In 1995, she worked with Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy to pass the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), regarded as one of the most impactful pieces of health care legislation in modern U.S. history.
The law, which was signed by President Bill Clinton, established standards and rules to protect the privacy and security of patients’ health information while making it easier for individuals to keep their health insurance coverage when changing or losing jobs.
In 1996, Kassebaum married former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker.
