Africa

-Rwanda said it would exit the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) as tensions between Kigali and the Democratic Republic of Congo mounts. Kigali was set to assume the chairmanship of the 11-member bloc at a meeting in Equatorial Guinea on Saturday.

Rwanda accused the Congolese government of using the organization against its interests.

The M23 rebel group, backed by the Rwandan government, seized eastern Congo’s two largest cities earlier this year—causing fears of a broader regional war.

-The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday that mpox continues to be a public health emergency in Central Africa.

-The Chadian government suspended new visas to U.S. citizens after the Trump administration announced a travel ban targeting the North African country—in addition to 11 other nations.

-Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu died last week at the age of 68.

Lungu served as the central African nation’s sixth president from 2015 to 2021 before losing re-election to current President Hakainde Hichilema.

Americas and the Caribbean

-Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe remained in critical condition after being shot in the capital, Bogotá, on Monday, according to a statement from the hospital treating him.

Uribe—a prospective 2026 presidential candidate—was shot during a speech at a campaign event. The suspect—a fifteen-year-old boy—was taken into custody shortly after. Attorney General Luz Adriana Camargo said he faces up to eight years in a rehabilitation center.
