Africa
-Sudan’s army chief named an acting prime minister just weeks after his forces ejected the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces from the capital, Khartoum.
-Nigeria named a new commander to ward off a renewed insurgency by Islamist militants in the country’s northeast.
-Somalia has barred Taiwanese citizens from entering the country amid a dispute over Taipei’s recognition of Somaliland.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991—a move not recognized by the central government in Mogadishu. In 2020, Taiwan—itself a self-governing island nation claimed by China—and Somaliland opened representative offices in their respective capitals, angering Mogadishu and Beijing.
Taiwan said China instigated the move by Somalia as it seeks to isolate its government.
-Copper production in Zambia surged 30% in the first quarter, compared with the same period in 2024.
The landlocked country is Africa’s second-largest producer of the metal, behind the Democratic Republic of Congo.
