Africa

-A spokesperson for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday that Ramaphosa would discuss business opportunities for Elon Musk’s companies on a visit to Washington, D.C., tomorrow.

President Donald Trump is expected to host Ramaphosa at the White House as bilateral relations between the two countries have frayed.

Last week, the Trump administration granted refugee status to white South Africans it said were persecuted by Ramaphosa’s government.

Pretoria has denied the claim.

-Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah Burhan appointed a former United Nations official as the military-led government’s prime minister.

-The Trump administration is planning an African leaders summit to be held in Washington later this year, according to a State Department official.

-Candidates supported by Argentine President Javier Milei led in legislative elections held in Buenos Aires on Sunday.

-Heavy rains pummeled rural areas north of Argentina’s capital over the weekend.

-Chile’s economy grew by 0.7% in the first quarter of 2025, more than anticipated by economists.
